CLASSIC 60s sitcom Get Smart comes alive on stage at Garrick Theatre from July 24, following the misadventures of spy Maxwell Smart and his assistant Agent 99.

Originally created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry as a parody of James Bond, winning seven Emmy and two Golden Globe Awards, it was adapted for stage in 1967 by Christopher Segal based on the original pilot episode.

Describing his approach to Get Smart, and the caricature of Bond’s enemies, gadgets and world take-over plots, Brooks noted: “Do what they did, except stretch it half an inch.”

Director Ken Harris has taken on the challenge of bringing it to life for Perth audiences, as Maxwell Smart and 99 go on the trail of KAOS boss Siegfried and his “Inthermo” machine, which is powerful enough to destroy the US.

“I have long been a fan of the comic genius of Mel Brooks and Get Smart in particular,” he said. “The play has most of the famous characters, one-liners and gags that have been loved for generations.

“I’m a self-confessed Get Smart tragic – and Maxwell Smart is really an insane mix of James Bond and Inspector Clouseau.”

Harris has vast experience in the Perth theatre scene, acting and directing in numerous productions since the age of 10, with Marloo, Garrick and Acorn Theatres.

Lee Sheppard has taken on the role of Maxwell Smart with Lisa Skrypichayko as Agent 99, Andrew Warwick as Chief and Geoff Miethe as Siegfried.

“Max is an iconic character, much loved by fans of the show, and the role allows me to play up my comedic talents,” Sheppard said. “He’s also a very lucky idiot.”

Sheppard is joined by Lisa Skrypichayko as Agent 99, who adds: “I loved watching Get Smart and I held 99 up a role model, as many young girls did, so it’s a privilege to be able to play her on stage. I like 99’s sense of loyalty to Max and the way she keeps her cool under pressure.”

Get Smart plays at 8pm July 24, 25, 30, 31, August 1, 6, 7 and 8 with a 2pm matinee on July 26 at Garrick Theatre, 16 Meadow Street, Guildford.

Tickets are $16, $14 concession – book through the Swan Valley Visitor Centre on (08) 9379 9400 between 9am and 4pm.
